Supported living separates two things that a care home bundles together: where you live and the support you get.
You hold a tenancy, in the same way as any other tenant, and a care provider supports you in that home.
Most commonly adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with mental health needs, and younger disabled adults moving on from family homes or residential schools.
Housing costs: rent and eligible service charges, usually met through Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit.
Care and support: funded by the council after a needs assessment, subject to the means test. Many people take this as a direct payment and employ their own staff.
Because the two are separate, supported living can be more financially workable than residential care for working age adults.

In supported living you hold your own tenancy and the care is a separate arrangement, so you can in principle change care provider without moving. In a care home, accommodation and care come as one package from one provider. Supported living usually gives more control and a different benefits position.
