Support for adults with a physical disability is built around independence: staying in your own home, working if you want to, and choosing who supports you.
Care at home. Personal care, help with moving and handling, medication and daily tasks. Often two carers where hoisting is involved.
Direct payments and personal assistants. The most common arrangement for working-age disabled adults. You take the budget and employ your own staff.
Supported living. Your own tenancy with support, where living entirely independently is not practical.
Equipment and adaptations. From grab rails to a full wet room.
Council social care. A Care Act needs assessment, then the means test. Most working-age disabled adults sit below the £14,250 lower capital limit, so capital is ignored. Push hard on disability related expenditure: the council must deduct the extra costs disability creates, and it is the single most missed reduction in the whole assessment.
Disabled Facilities Grant. Up to £30,000 in England for adaptations. Start with a free occupational therapy assessment from the council.
Access to Work. Equipment, a support worker, taxis to work, or vehicle adaptations. Not means tested, does not affect benefits, never repaid.
PIP. Not means tested, and the enhanced mobility rate also opens the Motability scheme, which lets you lease a car, wheelchair-accessible vehicle or powered wheelchair using the allowance.
Equipment and minor adaptations costing under £1,000 should be provided free by the council following an OT assessment. That includes grab rails, raised toilet seats, bath boards and similar. You should not be paying for these.
Wheelchairs come through the NHS wheelchair service. Ask about a personal wheelchair budget, which lets you put the NHS contribution towards a chair of your own choosing.
